Alright Axeheads, sickness kept EpicBattleAxe.com’s The Rumor KILL from bringing the havoc last week but fear not, that flu got its ass kicked by a one-two combination of Advil and my white blood cells. It doesn’t matter anyway because this week is so much more awesome then last week. Why? Well for one hockey season has FINALLY started and after months upon months of watching baseball and reruns (ugh!) at long last I have a reason to turn my cable box on! The other reason this week is full of awesomeness is because we have a great line up this week with rumors of another post-apocalyptic game (cheers for originality!), a new Wii remote, the possibility of even more Halo and the potential death of a certain creepy virtual child. So, with the line-up set it’s time to plow through this week’s rumors with the brutality of Kratos on crack! Let’s do this…

THE RUMOR: There will be more frequent Halo releases in the future

THE SOURCE: IGN

MY TAKE: It seems like Microsoft is looking at Activision’s ever growing money pile courtesy of yearly releases such as Guitar Hero and Call of Duty and thinking they want a piece of that action too. I don’t blame them though, if I could extort millions from gamers by releasing the same game over and over again I probably would too. Anyway, in an interview with IGN, Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer said he didn’t think a Halo game every three years was frequent enough. Not to rain on Spencer’s parade but I guess they don’t count Halo 3: ODST and Halo Wars as Halo games because that would make the gap between Halo games since Halo 3 about one year. Bad math and logic aside, it looks like the Halo torch being past from Bungie to 343 Industries will result in more Halo games in a shorter amount of time. So is Halo going to join the ranks of COD and Guitar Hero to become an annual series? More importantly is this what fans really want?

THE VERDICT: BELIEVE IT!!!

Since 343 Industries is actually an in house developer, Microsoft will have direct control over the development and publishing of the Halo franchise. Do you think of all the corporations on the planet MICROSOFT would actually miss an opportunity to get $60/year from fans. Of course they won’t, they know that they make over $100 million with every Halo release (maybe not Halo Wars) so a smart business decision would be to make a yearly Halo to try and bring in an extra $100 million in annual revenue. Simple. Now the ultimate question becomes, do Halo fans really want this? I bet there are tons of Halo fans that would foam at the mouth at the idea of an annual Halo game and would go to every midnight launch every year. That’s fine I guess, but consider this. How many changes and revolutionary ideas have there been between the three Halo games? Not much and that’s okay because Bungie had a formula and as they say ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’. They took those three years between development to polish what they had and create a well balanced and incredibly fun game. But, do you think 343 Industries could replicate that success in just one year…every year? That’s a thought I leave you to discuss below.

THE RUMOR: Just Cause 2 developer is working on a Mad Max game

THE SOURCE: Giantbomb

MY TAKE: Yes, I am a Mad Max fan so this news probably means more to people like me than everyone else. For those who don’t know, the Mad Max franchise is based in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world of anarchy and muscle cars where if you own the gas, you own the world. These films are the baseline for many post-apocalyptic games, Borderlands being the best example (seriously if you played Borderlands you know the tone of Mad Max). Oh and remember that trap in the first Saw where the two guys are chained up and the only way to escape before the toxic gas kills them is to saw through their own leg? That’s not an original idea, Mad Max did it first. For more details take a look at the Wikipedia page, but the bottom line is this is a game begging for a current generation console release. So why hasn’t it happened? That can be blamed on Mad Max 4: Fury Road, the next installment in the series that has been in development for, well, hell – the past 25 years – and may be the main source material for the game. There’s been murmurs about this game for a long time and it looks like Avalanche Studios, the minds behind Just Cause 2 it the one taking the helm based on tweets and tidbits explained in the source. Could we see the grand daddy of the post-apocalyptic genre finally get a justified game release or is this just Twitter causing its usual chaos?

THE VERDICT: KILL IT!!!

This one sadly is probably not going to happen, at least for a while. How is it possible the game is based on an upcoming movie that is in development hell? It could be the game isn’t based on that particular movie but is set in the same universe as the franchise I suppose but it seems unlikely. Also, Avalanche Studio’s next game is already known and is based on a major Hollywood license in 2012. That could mean a Mad Max movie game except again, development hell has swallowed the Mad Max 4 film whole and it doesn’t look like its letting go. Even if it did get picked up again there’s no way the movie could make a 2012 deadline. So it looks like Mad Max is going to stay on the back burner for a while longer and until then you’ll have to look at other sources of entertainment to run over bandits with automobiles.

THE RUMOR: A new Wii Remote with built-in MotionPlus is coming in November

THE SOURCE: Shacknews

MY TAKE: I think it’s fair to say that the MotionPlus accessory was Nintendo’s first bust on the Wii. The casual game market that the console caters to doesn’t care about a more sensitive Wii Remote and would rather not spend the extra $25 to play Just Dance. Even hardcore gamers don’t want it because they know not all game support the MotionPlus add-on and it would be a waste of money. So when an updated Wii Remote with built in MotionPlus (creatively called the ‘Wii Remote Plus’) appeared on GameStop.com packaged with the Nintendo published FlingSmash (don’t worry, I haven’t heard about it either) the evidence seemed to point to Nintendo finally giving up on the add-on and just making an improved Wii-mote for new adopters of the console and people looking for an upgrade. However, the ad for the game has already been taken down leaving us all to wonder if the game even exist, if they got the release date wrong, or what?

THE VERDICT: BELIEVE IT!!!

I thoroughly believe that the package and the date are real. GameStop wouldn’t bother to make a page for a game in the first place if they didn’t know the game existed. Also, in terms of the date it may seem weird to people that a game would be released in North America on a Sunday until you remember Nintendo does indeed release their games on Sundays. So yes, this package is real and the date is probably real and I think it’s a good idea. The Wii finally has competition in the casual motion controller market with the Playstation Move, backed by the ever so incredible Kevin Butler, finally hitting store shelves and Kinect, backed by Microsoft’s endless supply of capital, coming in November. They need to make sure that despite the HD power and technology behind the new motion controllers that the Wii still gives the best experience. The best way to do that is to make the controller as responsive as possible, thus having MotionPlus built in (four years too late mind you) is one way to step up against the competition.

THE RUMOR: Project Milo has been scrapped

THE SOURCE: Destructoid

MY TAKE: Did this just really happen? Did Peter Molyneux really just kill off his virtual hell spawn? According to a source at Lionhead Studios the project was scrapped about a week ago with 19 workers on the project being laid off. This may not come as a surprise to some as most believed Project Milo was merely a tech demo and nothing more. I belonged to that school of thought until Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg seemingly said it was a real game with a holiday 2010 release. Microsoft of course doesn’t comment on rumors on speculation so getting an answer from them is useless. So to summarize, we have a game that might not be a game that might be canceled – or might not be. Yep, it’s a bit of a mess but that’s why The Rumor KILL is here, to clear the crap and the lies from the truth.

THE VERDICT: KILL IT!!!

There is no way the stubborn delusional Peter Molyneux would ever…EVER scrap Project Milo. Did you hear him talk about it at E3? He wouldn’t stop raving about how Milo was going to change everything about virtual interaction. If this technology was really as revolutionary as they say and took 19 workers to build then why would they just throw it away? It seems like a waste of resources to me. Yes, I think this technology is going to be implemented into future Lionhead Studios and yes, I agree that Project Milo probably won’t see store shelves this holiday. Despite all of that though, I don’t think they are scrapping the project. Instead I predict they are just leaving it on the back burner as it were. They’ll work on Fable III and its DLC along with other projects and once they are ready to roll with Milo, he’ll be watching you while you shop on his store shelf. On an off note, if Project Milo is scrapped I know for a fact it wasn’t Lionhead’s decision. It was actually John Connors sent from the future to destroy Milo who eventually becomes dictator and ruler of the Earth.

The Final Say

My final say this week is about the possibility of a game based on my favorite movie this year. Variety reported on Tuesday that Christopher Nolan revealed the plans for an Inception game during a press conference in Italy. He told the crowd the game would be filled with ideas that couldn’t fit in the film and would be released in a couple years. Now for those who saw Inception you know that if an idea couldn’t fit in that film then it must be so mind-blowing the projector would melt at the idea of projecting that much awesome. Imagine having the zero gravity fighting, the dream layers concept and all the psychology mind games the movie featured in a single video game experience. Even better, imagine the co-op possibilities. You could easily have you and four friends take on the rolls of the Inception team with an Extractor, a Point Man, A Shade, An Architect and a Chemist. Would all those roles fit well into a video game? Maybe not but the possibilities are there. If this was made right it could EASILY be the movie video game ever!

That will end another week of EpicBattleAxe.com’s The Rumor KILL and I hope that this hot dish of rumors to mentally chow down on is both delicious and thought provoking. Now that my job is over I will let you enjoy your course and I’ll be serving again next week. In the meantime, please feel free to chime in with your thoughts on the above-mentioned rumors as we attempt to cleave the fat from the gaming news of the day! See ya next time on The Rumor KILL!

Boot up your Battle Rifles. Get cozy with your Covenant Carbine. Sweep reality under the rug and swipe yourself some sweet-ass kills with your uber cool Energy Sword – this week HALO: REACH is taking over the gaming world! Of course, while we here at the ‘Axe enjoy getting swept away in all of the excitement of ANY huge game launch, we also consider it our duty to use the gaming stories of the day as a platform to generate interesting, entertaining, and insightful conversation. With Halo: Reach hitting the streets this week, what better time to discuss the relevance of the franchise on the whole? We’re doing just that in EpicBattleCry Skirmish 089, but now we’re turning the floor over to you. Obviously, you don’t have to be a huge Halo fan (or even a Halo player…) to have an opinion on the game’s industry-wide impact. The franchise is easily one of the biggest in gaming, but this week we’re tasking YOU with telling us just why that it. Has Halo come to define the console shooter experience? Will the memories of Spartans live on in the history books about gaming? What defining characteristics have helped set Bungie’s blockbuster series apart from the rest of the crowded FPS market? So, It’s with these thoughts in mind that we post the following Member BattleCry Topic Starter questions to you:

WHAT HAS DEFINED HALO AND WHERE DO YOU THINK THE FRANCHISE STANDS IN GAMING HISTORY?

Of course, you might want to play Reach a bit before answering if you intend to do so or, if you already think you have an opinion on the topic, go ahead and fire away in the comments below. This is about defining Halo‘s place in gaming history, so keep the conversation constructive and avoid comparisons if they’re only meant to serve as flame bait. We’re not here to argue whether or not Halo is better or worse than anything else, this topic is simply meant to gauge your thoughts on the popular franchise’s place in gaming lore and the reasons why it got there.

Lastly, please take a moment to cast your vote in the EBA Poll of the Week pertaining to all things Halo as we collectively Cry Havoc and Let Our Voices Be Heard!!! As always, thank in advance for your input and enjoy this week’s Member BattleCries here on EpicBattleAxe.com!

Cheers,
Today Bungie and Activision announced an exclusive, worldwide partnership that will see the long-time Microsoft only Halo developer Bungie’s new IP being published across multiple platforms throughout the next 10 years. Of course, Microsoft still owns the rights to Halo and Bungie is still an independent studio, but the deal signifies a new long-term commitment that will see Bungie titles reach all major platforms.

While no big details of the particular IP were given, aside from being noted as Bungie’s “next big action game universe”, we’re sure we’ll get more info on the project relatively soon. Check out the full press release below for all of the details and let us know what you think about this significant development in the comments section below.

PRESS RELEASE

Bungie, the developer of blockbuster game franchises including Halo, Myth and Marathon, and Activision, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, the #1 online games publisher (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that they have entered into an exclusive 10-year partnership to bring Bungie’s next big action game universe to market. Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and device. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The groundbreaking alliance will provide Bungie its first such partnership since splitting off from Microsoft in 2007, significantly broadening its global reach by providing the resources and support to develop, distribute and release games worldwide on multiple platforms and devices.

Activision will broaden its portfolio with a new franchise from one of the industry’s most creative, successful and proven studios, whose games have sold more than 25 million units worldwide. To date, Bungie’s Halo games have generated approximately $1.5 billion in revenues, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK. Activision expects this agreement to be accretive to its operating margins as of the release of the first game.

“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Harold Ryan, President of Bungie. “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”

“Bungie is one of the premier studios in our industry and we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with their talented team over the next decade,” stated Thomas Tippl, Chief Operating Officer of Activision Blizzard. “Bungie has developed some of the most compelling and successful games, multiplayer experiences and thriving fan communities, and this alliance underscores our long-standing commitment to foster the industry’s best creative talent. Our unprecedented partnership with Bungie will enable us to broaden our pipeline of exciting new games as we continue to strengthen our industry position and pursue long-term growth opportunities.”

Thx for the tip Rialce!

After last week’s exploration into all things 2D, we’re switching dimensions to gather YOUR ideas on the gaming franchises that can most benefit from the inevitable implementation of 3D technology. Sure, it’s a broad stroke, but you loyal (and creative) Axe Heads have already managed to come up with some pretty spiffy ideas as to how 3D gaming can ultimately change the way we play. We’re kicking things off with a Member BattleCry from PeezSquared who avoids running in circles as he gets straight to the point in the well crafted MBC all about 3D and the FPS genre. Put on your funny looking glasses and check it out after the jump!

The gaming franchises that would most benefit from 3D technology are first-person-shooter titles like Modern Warfare, Battlefield, Halo, Bioshock, etc.

The first person perspective already greatly increases the immersion of players into the game by setting the world in front of your eyes as if you were an actual part of the story. There are no character avatar shoulders to look over to remind you that you are simply controlling an artificial being. Instead, the obstacles and challenges come right at your face for you to deal with with your own (virtual) hands.
3D innovations would bring that immersion to the next level with a greater sense of depth and realism in the game surroundings. Coupled with surround sound systems, 3D gaming would help to create more intense playing experiences.

Imagine fighting across a war-zone, tracer rounds zipping past your head, artillery fire in the background, and an explosion rips the ground apart in front of you. Debris and shrapnel are hurled towards you, and with the 3D technology at work, I guarantee you’ll flinch every time.

I do not believe 3D technology has been developed enough yet to provide such a drastically more real and intense immersion, but it all has to start somewhere.

END

Well said Peez! I too think that the current 3D tech has a way to go before it will truly impact the interactive entertainment experience, but I can TOTALLY see the FPS genre benefiting from some sweet ass 3D action, especially when combined with the other pieces of tech you mentioned! Well, what about the other ‘Axe Heads? Anyone else have thoughts on particular franchises with the FPS genre they think will benefit from the use of 3D??? Let us know in the comments below and if you have a DIFFERENT 3D GAME/GENRE you wanna sound off on then feel free to do that over on this week’s topics starter post where you can SUBMIT A NEW TOPIC:

SUBMIT YOUR MEMBER BATTLECRY IN THE COMMENTS SECTION HERE.

OK, that’s all for now, but stay tuned to the ‘Axe all week long to see if your MBC gets featured and keep the ideas coming!!!

Later,

‘Lo Axeheads and welcome to End of the Weak; a two-day paradise in a five-day sea of misery. This past week I caught a fan-made trailer for the original Tron and it got me thinking about the art of trailers and how far that medium has come. And that in-turn got me to thinking about the slew of fan-made and otherwise non-official trailers floating around the tubes for some our fav video game series. So, today I bring you a humble collection of some the most epic and utterly fail of such trailers to be found in the twenty-eight known galaxies.

I warn you know, this is going to be painful in places, some of you won’t make it, some of you will escape into madness, others will stab yourself in the face to escape the torment of living with the images you’re about to see. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Let’s start with the fan-made Tron trailer I mentioned earlier. Not a direct video-game to screen adaptation per se but I think it gives us a good baseline for what a person with some time on their hands can do.

Okay, but that’s all footage from an existing film, lit and shot by professional, with professional (though dated) visual fx; how can your average fanboy compete with that? If you pick the right game and get creative with the presentation (and know a 6’1 asian model) you might make out okay.

Alright, I’ll grant you nothing that’s going to win the Palme d’Or anytime soon, but I challenge you to say you wouldn’t rather watch that Street Fighter film, than this one…

Excuse me while I see if battery acid can get the stink of zombie-Raul Julia out of my eyes. While I’m gone, see if you can bring yourself to believe that this ‘professional’ Street Fighter trailer sucks any less than the fan-made ones.

See, just cause you’ve got a budget doesn’t mean your films’s going anywhere but straight to the five dollar bin at Best Buy. However, on the subject of budgets there have been some unofficial trailers that have benefitted from a little financial backing; remember this classic?

While not a exactly a trailer, Arms Race gave Halo fans the world over nerdgasms at the thought of their beloved series finally making the jump to the big screen and at least a taste of what it might look like.

Back to fighting games a second. Years ago, Tony described to me his ideal King of Fighters trailer, who’d play who, what would happen, the works. That twenty minute phone conversation is one hundred and eighty seven billion times better than this piece of shit for the actual King of Fighters movie…

Y’know what the problem here is? Passion. The ass clowns making these films have money, but no frickin’ passion. Genuinely giving a crap about what you’re creating goes a lot farther than money. To make the case, I give you the infamous Thundercats fan-trailer; still one of the most impressive I’ve seen to date.

That’s it folks. I’m out. Hit me back in the comments below with your favorite fan trailers for video games, classic animated series, sequels that never were and the like. I’ll be back here next time with another End of the Weak!

Hey gang, how goes it? DK here with today’s Member BattleCry pertaining to this week’s topic which is all about your favorite console exclusives. After yesterday’s look at God of War, it’s time to do a 360 and change consoles over to the Microsoft side. Axe Head SoldierFirstClass brings up the Halo franchise and describes what is so great about it from a personal perspective. Hit the jump to check it out and be sure to chime in with your comments below!

SoldierFirstClass says:

My battle-cry goes out to the Halo Franchise and especially Halo: Reach. Halo was THE console exclusive that turned gamers to Microsoft’s machine, pulling Playstation gamers away from their trusted console and into the grinder of Microsoft. It not only defined what first person shooters would become on consoles it set a bar so high with it’s first introduction that Halo 2, 3 and ODST, massively high selling games, were pretty much exactly the same gameplay as the original. Having said that, Halo: Reach now looks to be taking an entirely new approach, reworking that which was stale into new crispy freshness, retooling every conceivable aspect of this game to make Reach the next genre defining step of console shooters.

END

Cool! There ya have it…You didn’t think we’d be talking console exclusive love this week and NOT mention Halo did ya??? It’s winter again and that can only mean one thing…the Bungie Winter Pentathlon! Somehow in between games of skeeball, hacky sack and of course Halo, Bungie has found time to divulge a bit of information about this year’s forthcoming blockbuster Halo: Reach.

In a recent blog post, Bungie outlined its plans to today break away from its first week back from a two week holiday hiatus and “rage against the dying of the light, play an absurd pile of games, and keep on feeding our already fattened faces with soft drinks, beer, and a wealth of ridiculously rich and totally delicious snack food.” Sounds fun. So what’s it to you? Well, amidst the hacky sack and Pictionary death matches, Bungie was nice enough to give the eager gaming public a morsel of info identified only as the “Hall Reach Super Secret Game Mode.”

From the post:

“Some number of players will square off against some number of other players in what will undoubtedly be a rousing and highly competitive game of something we’re not talking about yet,” Bungie wrote on its official site. “Points awarded for doing all kinds of untold stuff!”

What is this super secret game mode? I guess we are left to chew over the idea until Bungie is kind enough to fill us in, and when they do. you can be certain that the ‘Axe will have all of the sweet Spartan-flavored details. For now, we guess you should practice up on your Pictionary.

Steady the bow and open fire, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! In the first Skirmish of the new year, we examine the rumors of an NFL Trainer title and matching peripheral for the Wii, find out if Guilty Gear is headed to PS3 & 360, ponder the leaked info of a new Dragon Age expansion, and discuss Capcom‘s announcement that three titles are being delayed further into 2010.

With the turn of a new decade upon us, we take a look back and ponder what the most influential games and franchises of the past ten years were. Next up, we look ahead into the coming year and run down our top-five picks for the most anticipated titles of 2010.

The Battle Cry of the Week goes to Udon Entertainment’s new Mega Man artbook collection, digital comics on the PSP, the seven-part YouTube review of The Phantom Menace that’s better than the film, and the year that saw direct communication between developers and gamers take hold.

With 2009 coming to a close and 10 years of awesome gaming behind us, we thought it was an excellent time to look back on what made the past decade a special one in gaming. Of course, new hardware, industry growth, and and overall shift to acceptance of gaming as a viable platform have helped define the decade that was, but for us gamers, it’s THE GAMES that we’ll look back on and remember the most. On the next episode of EpicBattleCry, we’ll be discussing a rather interesting topic…What was the most influential game/franchise of the past decade?

We wanna hear from you boys and girls to round up some input. I started a thread inside the EBA forums to discuss the matter and will soon give you some of my personal thoughts on which title might be good for the discussion. Now remember…we’re not asking for “Best” game of the decade…We wanna know which title/franchise INFLUENCED gaming the most. This could mean that the game/franchise helped redefine a genre, move gaming towards the mainstream, or otherwise had the most impact on the industry. In other words, gaming might be TOTALLY DIFFERENT if this title/franchise didn’t exist.

Also, feel free to cast your vote in the poll on the EpicBattleAxe.com home page. We’ll keep it live for a few days to gather some good input and let you all see what other people think as well.

Of course, you’ll hear what we conclude on the next episode of EpicBattleCry, which is scheduled to go live this coming Monday, January 4, 2010.

Alright gang, thanks in advance for you input…Now let us know what you think…ttys!

Halo Waypoint, the new virtual home for all things Halo, launches today on Xbox LIVE, and will be the exclusive destination for full-episode previews of “Halo Legends” beginning Saturday, Nov. 7. Available for Halo fans worldwide following a successful preview period, Halo Waypoint brings all the richness of the Halo universe together in one place. Halo Waypoint features daily updates of fresh, exciting content such as developer interviews, trailers and screenshots, exclusive video footage, community activities and the latest Halo news.

In addition, Halo Waypoint includes an innovative career system that tracks players’ accomplishments across multiple Halo games and gives them new ways to show off their heroic gameplay feats. By downloading and “enlisting” in Halo Waypoint, players will be rewarded with a variety of Bungie-created Halo 3: ODST Avatar Awardables for attaining specific Achievements in the game. Rewards vary from stylish T-shirts to full sets of ODST armor. The experience is retroactive, so if players have already unlocked the requisite Achievements, the awards will be ready for them once they enlist in Halo Waypoint.

As a bonus for enlisting to Halo Waypoint, fans will receive a Monitor accessory for their Avatars modeled after the Halo character, 343 Guilty Spark. The Monitor will help fans find their way around Halo Waypoint, the new destination for all things “Halo” on Xbox LIVE.

The rollout of exciting new Halo content doesn’t stop there. This Saturday, the first preview episode of the highly anticipated anime series, Halo Legends, will debut only on Halo Waypoint. Set to be distributed in early 2010 by Warner Home Video, the rich anthology of anime short films will tell all-new stories in the epic Halo saga.

Written and created by an array of renowned anime studios and produced by 343 Industries, Halo Legends will explore never-before-told stories based on themes and characters in the vast Halo universe. Sponsored by the U.S. Air Force, previews of four new Halo Legends episodes will be available only on Halo Waypoint during 24-hour live-streaming events on Xbox LIVE over the next three months.

The first Halo Legends preview episode, “The Babysitter,” is created by famed anime house STUDIO4C, and follows the story of a group of ODST’s who reluctantly accept a Spartan sniper into their strike team. As they embark on a perilous mission to assassinate a high-ranking Covenant Prophet, old rivalries must be reexamined if the mission is to succeed. Watch what happens as the mission progresses into hostile territory, and both the Spartan and the ODST’s discover something important about the other.
