PSN goes SEN

Sony has announced that by the 7th of February, they will turn Playstation Network into Sony Entertainment Network.
This will go along side their new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Here is the why:

“This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network.” This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

All fun and good, but wasn’t Sony in a pickle with their Privacy Policy? And now they are advancing this new stage of their Privacy Policy? Is it me, or do I smell something burning?

Anyways, this name change at least gives us a view of what Sony wants for the future. One account, one goal, one target for Anonymous… Ho wait, did I say that last thing out loud?

PlayStation Vita hits shelves February 22

SCEA’s Jack Tretton took the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco today to announce what many have been clamoring for: The launch date for the PlayStation Vita. Well, now we know that our dirty little mits will be able to hold one of Sony’s innovative new devices on February 22, 2012 in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe–a wait that isn’t as long as many thought.

As noted at E3, a WiFi-only model will retail for $249.99, and its WiFi/3G-enabled brethren will retail for $299.99.

So, who’s headed to the store tomorrow to pre-order this bad boy, if you haven’t done so already, that is?

93,000 PSN/SOE Accounts Accessed Says Sony

In the immortal words of Threepio, “Here we go again.” Sony has revealed that 93,000 online accounts have been hacked. That breaks down as 60,000 PSN users and 33,000 SOE users whose accounts have been accessed. Philip Reitinger, VP and Chief Information Security Officer says that no credit card information is “at risk” and Sony has locked the affected accounts pending a password reset request.

Sony was also quick to point out that it appears the source of the compromised login credentials came from outside Sony’s network, unlike the infamous attack earlier this year. If your account was one of those affected, expect to receive an email from Sony directing you to reset your password. We’ll get more news on this as it develops.

Is this evidence that Sony still hasn’t got things under control or does the fact that no credit card information was compromised prove that Sony has improved security in the wake of this new intrusion? Let us know what you think in the comments.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta Demo hits PSN Today

If nothing wakes you up better than a little rage from Kratos, Sony just became your new alarm clock. Without a snooze button.

The God of War: Ghost of Sparta demo is officially out for all PSN users, for free, as part of the general PS Store update.

The demo has been available to PS Plus members since Sept. 3, but it is now gracing the hard drives of PSN users who may be a little less Virtual Country Club and a little more Eating This Two-Day-Old Burrito May Be A Bad Idea But Hey, It’s Free among us.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta is scheduled to drop Nov. 2 for PSP and PSP Go.

Lords of Shadow Demo Available Today on PSN Plus for Europe

Sony Europe updated their blog this morning with news that a demo for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow would be available today for PSN Plus subscribers; the demo will go live for European PS3 and 360 owners on September 29th. No official word from SCEA about seeing the demo in North America, but the rumor mill is pointing to Thursday (Sept 23) as a possible release window for PSN Plus members on this side of the pond.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is due out on Oct 5 in North America, Oct 7 in Europe, and Oct 16 in Japan.

Is a timed-exclusive-demo through paid services simply a way of creating good value for subscribers or, as we move into the ever-saturated fourth quarter and gamers become increasingly more selective about what titles actually make it onto their ‘buy’ list; does it irrevocably harm the game’s momentum by holding back the demo from the masses until just days before the game’s release? Cammie Dunaway Exits as Nintendo Faces Stiff Holiday Competition

After nearly three years in the position, Cammie Dunaway is stepping down as VP of sales and marketing at Nintendo of America. Although there’s been no official comment on the timing, its difficult to view the news of Dunaway’s departure without putting it in the context of Nintendo‘s recent struggles. With sales in decline for the last year, the Xbox 360 outselling the Wii two months in a row (something that would have been laughable at one time), and Apple‘s iOS lineup poised to overtake the DS, Big N is on the ropes.

Indeed, Nintendo, once the unexpected, but clear, top-contender of this generation now has a lead they likely won’t be able to hold through the end of the year. While Apple, Microsoft, and Sony will all have new hardware in the marketplace for the holidays, Nintendo will have only the 3Ds launch in Japan to hold the line until 2011 and the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword as well as a world-wide launch of their new handheld.

Nintendo has not named a successor for Dunaway, who steps down on October 1st and will reportedly be taking a position outside the game industry.

Sony Shoots Down Kinect with yaybuttons.com

To kick off the upcoming motion-control console warfare, Sony is taking a few cheap shots at Microsoft Kinect with a new website, yaybuttons.com.

The site features a Move controller and prompts visitors to push its buttons, which reveal a barrage of sarcasm bombs and snark grenades from Sony’s fictional V.P. of everything, Kevin Butler:

Some people think you don’t need buttons. WHAT?! Craziness. Could you imagine gaming without buttons? Where would the control come from? You couldn’t snipe. Couldn’t fire any sort of weapon at all, really. Unless you turn your fingers into a gun. Pew! Pew! What are we, mimes?!? Buttons can do anything!

It appears Sony wants us to believe its Move controller, which is a colorful glowing ball on top of a big black stick that you have to squeeze and rub your fingers over to press its buttons, is more hardcore than Kinect.

Hm.

Sony has made the first strike – Is yaybuttons.com justified, or is this an early display of a Sony superiority complex? What do you think will be Microsoft’s retaliation? booballsandblacksticks.com? Although I think that one might be taken already….
