With the continuing success of World of Warcraft and the impending release of Diablo III, Blizzard has announced the World of Warcraft Annual Pass to offer WoW subscribers a chance to participate in both apocalyptic conflicts… without breaking the bank.

With the continuing success of World of Warcraft and the impending release of Diablo III, Blizzard has announced the World of Warcraft Annual Pass. As pointed out on the official Blizzard website, players who make a 12-month subscription commitment to World of Warcraft through the WoW Annual Pass will receive some pretty sweet rewards – INCLUDING DIABLO III. Here’s what you get:

• Diablo III FREE – Download the digital version via Battle.net for free when the game launches early next year. This is the full game, not a trial edition.

• Tyrael’s Charger WoW Flying Mount – Ride for the Archangel of Justice on all current and future characters on a single World of Warcraft account. Tyrael’s Charger will arrive via in-game mail with the upcoming launch of patch 4.3.

• Access to the Next WoW Expansion Beta Test – Get a guaranteed spot in the beta test for the next World of Warcraft expansion (at a time to be announced in the future).

The WoW Annual Pass is available on a monthly basis at $14.99 per month or a different billing cycle if you so choose. If you’re interested, just head here. It’s worth pointing out that you must be 18 or older, have a valid credit card, and have registered a full version of World of Warcraft on or before October 18, 2011 in order to participate.

Who plans on taking advantage of this???

Every one of you is a serial stalker, rapist, identity thief, and overall annoyance. No one likes you and no, you are not special; you are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You are purified, virtual reality evil.

But only if you play Blizzard games.

So, yes, prety much all of you.

Blizzard’s recent announcement to use real names in the new StarCraft II community site and World of Warcraft Cataclysm expansion forum has sparked a heated backlash from Battle.net users, with commenters fearing for their lives, jobs, money, privacy and emotional security when the shift takes place before July 27.

But with the comments it’s receiving on the Battle.net forums, perhaps Blizzard should be fearing for its own life instead. With over 1,399 combined pages of angry rants and threats to leave the forums and games entirely, Blizzard has sparked an online riot that could quickly turn to revolution.

Based on its new RealID service, Blizzard says its plans are a completely innocent attempt to stop flame wars and trolling on its immensely popular forums:

The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID – that is, their real-life first and last name – with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm. The classic Battle.net forums, including those for Diablo II and Warcraft III, will be moving to a new legacy forum section with the release of the StarCraft II community site and at that time will also transition to using Real ID for posting.

The official forums have always been a great place to discuss the latest info on our games, offer ideas and suggestions, and share experiences with other players – however, the forums have also earned a reputation as a place where flame wars, trolling, and other unpleasantness run wild. Removing the veil of anonymity typical to online dialogue will contribute to a more positive forum environment, promote constructive conversations, and connect the Blizzard community in ways they haven’t been connected before. With this change, you’ll see blue posters (i.e. Blizzard employees) posting by their real first and last names on our forums as well.

However pure its intentions, it would appear Battle.net users disagree with Blizzard’s new, hippie transparency philosophy, and a few for valid reasons. Blizzard’s decision is the most severe move against the common perceptions of internet privacy yet seen in the gaming community and a degree of backlash is duly expected.

Online anonymity is one reason so many people are drawn to computer games and forums. For some it is the ability to create a completely separate personality online, for others it is to live out a fantasy life, and for others still it is a simple matter of escape. The response to Blizzard’s announcement seems extreme, and for obvious reasons. People are fighting for their lives – virtual lives, but a life to which they are emotionally attached all the same. Perhaps we should be more concerned about the emotional attachment in the first place – how healthy is it to harbor a virtual persona on this level? – but for now the concern lies in Blizzard’s presumptuous removal of our anonymity.

But that’s just my opinion.

What do you think? Is a real name really this big of a deal, or are we overreacting as our anonymous personalities so often allow us to do? Post your thoughts below (and feel free to include your real name, if you dare).

With western MMOs like Lord of the Rings Online, Company of Heroes, and Dungeons and Dragons Online embracing the free-to-play game model, Blizzard has recently had to ask itself some difficult questions about its World of Warcraft strategy. Questions like, “What should I eat for lunch?”

Lead desinger Tom Chilton isn’t concerned with losing the massive WoW fanbase any time soon, subscription fee or not.

“We’re not spending a lot of time thinking about [going free-to-play]. It’s not something that’s a reality for us in the near future,” Chilton said.

WoW is the largest and most profitable MMO in the western market, with some 11.5 million subscribers worldwide, and while lesser games need to compete with one another, WoW has confidently held the throne since its release in 2004. Chilton thinks that’s reason enough to avoid the free-to-play model for now.

“I feel like they’re doing that to compete with other games that are on a similar subscriber level to what they were at. I imagine that when one of them went free to play it cannibalized some of the other subscribers,” Chilton said.

It seems WoW is in no danger of being eaten up by any games currently on the market or in production. However, Chilton is still casually preparing for the worst.

“I can definitely imagine that being the case with World of Warcraft,” he said. “If another game comes along and blows us away it may not make sense for us to have a subscription fee. Or even further down the line, when we have another MMO out.”

So until Blizzard creates its own demise in the form of a new MMO, WoW will remain subscription-based. Which means we probably have at least another decade to wait, so keep that piggy bank full.

Do you mind paying to play one of the largest and most intricate MMOs in the world? How would free-to-play affect the game? Give us your opinions right here!

Cult horror classic director Sam Raimi isn’t just a master of undead action and gore, he’s also a World of Warcraft fanboy with a level-72 character and the franchise’s best bet to make a WoW movie worth watching.

Raimi, director of Evil Dead, Army of Darkness and Drag me to Hell, is currently in production on Warcraft, and with a 40-page story outline, he has taken on the project as both a fan of the WoW universe and a serious artist.

“We’re still working on the story,” Raimi said. “We’re finding the characters and through the characters we’re finding the story… we’re trying to create realistic characters that can live in the world of Warcraft, as though you were in the game itself.”

According to Raimi, the film will be set entirely in the Warcraft universe, and if his epic vision is fully realized, Warcraft might turn out much like Lord of the Rings meets Time Bandits on crack.

Part of Raimi’s fascination with WoW lies in the game’s vistas and monsters, which he called “engrossingly terrifying and exciting.” If we know Raimi, after a comment like that we can expect an emphasis on horrifying beasts and desolate beauty in his version of Warcraft.

Robert Rodat, author of Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot, is slated to write Warcraft, with distributor Warner Bros. and production house Legendary Pictures. Blizzard senior vice president of creative development Chris Metzen is co-producing, probably to make sure Raimi remembers he’s not actually in the World of Warcraft during the shoot.

Warcraft is listed on IMDB with a 2013 release date, though this time frame has yet to be confirmed by any studios.

Does Warcraft sound epic enough for you? With Blizzard, Warner Bros., Rodat and Raimi behind it, this could be the next great fantasy adventure movie, easily. Tell us what you want to see in the film!

Players can access the WoW Auction House from the iPhone and iPod Touch apps—there is an app for that—or from the Armory website.

Once the beta ends, full Remote Auction House services will be subscription-based at $2.99 for 30 days. A free version will allow users a passive perspective on the Auction House, able to get real-time notifications and view their events but unable to carry out any actions on them. During the beta test, all services will be available but transactions are limited to 25 per day, with this number expected to increase to 200 for the final version. Blizzard has yet to announce when the beta will expire.

Will this new service take some of the stress from your WoW Auction House deals? Is this the beginning of a new era in the game, a transition to app-based and remotely-controlled play? Is that ridiculous? Let us know!

Lo Axeheads and welcome to the weekend! As you know, each friday I try to bring you some golden video morsel from around the web to entertain, inspire, and, verily, even educate. Speaking for myself, I am a voracious consumer of knowledge; I absolutely love learning new things. So, this weekend, I thought I’d share several videos from one of my favorite sources: TED. For those unfamiliar, TED is a non-profit group that organizes conferences to spread ideas. Originally, they brought together notable people from technology, entertainment, and design, but the scope has widened since then.

Last week in discussing the state of life-like computer generated characters, I used a Ted talk from Ed Ulbrich to illustrate the current state of that technology. This week, I’d thought I’d share some of the fascinating and though-provoking TED talks that have focused on our favorite past time: gaming. Ahead, you’ll explore ideas about what gaming is and what it can become; how it can shape people, culture, and maybe even save the world. If knowledge is power, then a good idea is an epic battle axe indeed.

These vids run about 20 min each but you’ve got the whole weekend ahead of you so take your time. Having said that, don’t wuss out on me; these talks are absolutely fascinating; discussing what impact gaming could have on society, education, individual growth, philosophy, and even global problems. People will go on to teach college courses, write books, and win nobel prizes off some of the things being discussed here.

So, we start with Jane McGonigal, game developer and PhD. She wants to save the world and thinks gaming is the only way to do it.

Next up, famed game creator Will Wright discusses how games are really just toys…that have the power to shape worlds.

In light of the conversation we have on EpicBattleCry this week on women in gaming, lets take a look at Brenda Laurel’s talk on the subject from 1998. Its fascinating to consider how much the past twelve years has changed the landscape of gaming and the impact by and on women.

David Perry shares his thoughts on the evolution of gaming and a remarkable student film that ponders whether gaming will create worlds that are better than real life.

And now for something completely different. As I’m a fan of his show, Mythbusters, I was intrigued to find a talk by Adam Savage discussing dodo birds, his obsession with Maltese Falcon, the famed statue’s distressing history, and his quest to possess it by any means necessary.

And I’m spent. I hope you managed to get through all of them and enjoyed them as much as I do. I think it might also be important to say that these are ideas…not dictums. The point of isn’t to teach you what to think, but inspire you to think for yourself.

There’s things in these vids that I personally disagree with, but being exposed to the ideas themselves is what got me thinking about how I feel about them in the first place and led me to consider and refine my views. I hope they inspire similar contemplation and discussion for you.

I’m out, see you next time,
Rejoice! It’s Friday and man, it’s been a week full of great ideas from our community on how to properly implement Microsoft’s Natal into gaming. Ya know how I know??? I find myself oddly optimistic about the potential (and I stress POTENTIAL) of Natal now that I’ve spent the last week reading and posting our community’s awesome ideas and even getting feedback in this week’s edition of Gaming Matters.

Well, ending on a high note, let’s take a look at today’s Member BattleCry which comes from EBA Member Gaurro and deals with facial recognition and Natal’s potential to enhance our gaming avatar’s like never before. Check it out after the jump and then chime in with your thoughts below.

Gaurro says:

Ok, here’s my Battle Cry for Natal. As most of you I’m a little bit skeptical about its potential to be a stand alone game experience. So I thought: what about its real potential to improve our actual perception of “online play” and the way all of us interact each other on the multiplayer side of a game?

If Natal is really capable of detect our facial expressions and our voice intonation (also distinguishing our voice from someone else’s in the same room, for exemple) it could be able to transfer them into the character we are playin’ with, almost in real-time (with or without customized characters). And it would be so for all the other players around us in the game world, porting our “feelings of that moment” into games, and in combination with its microphone, making that experience much more real-life like (mimicking our personality, our way to be, even within the game). A kind of “ultimate avatar”.

I’m not sure that Natal could detect and perform a real time lip-synch right now, but a generic one (mouth open/mouth shut based on voice-tracking) in combination with facial expressions could work well though.

Developers could create a bunch of little body animations that respond to our actual behaviour and feelings (performed by the character from time to time, not always, it would be invasive) without interfering too much with the gameplay.

Now, think about your favorite multiplayer game, and all your friends you use to play with, in this kind of situation… it would be like being together in the same room and talk about shit with a beer in your hands… ok, not a beer, an AK47 more likely, but in-game. (if I close my eyes I can already visualize a digitalized Brent in all his epic barbarian rage and awesomeness! I’m going to shit my pants…)

All these things with some other “moving detection potential” (that other axe-heads keep imagining and sharing) could really be a step forward.

I’ll not play as “Marcus Fenix” anymore, he’ll play as “Me”… I think it might be awesome.
Sorry for my english, but I’m sure you get the point.

END

Yes, we do get the point and “intriguing” doesn’t quite begin to justify the level of potential you’re bringing to the table. It’s topics like this that, originating from the gamers themselves, can really help direct developers towards proper implementation and delivering the things we really wanna see out of Natal. So, anyone else have a thought on the matter/ Let us know in the comments section below and if you have a different topic or Natal suggestion, then check out this week’s Member BattleCry page to SUBMIT A NEW TOPIC:

That’s our Friday Member BattleCry, but check out EpicBattleAxe.com throughout the weekend for any news/features updates and of course stop by soon to see what next week’s topic will be for you all to discuss!

Cheers gang,
With 2009 coming to a close and 10 years of awesome gaming behind us, we thought it was an excellent time to look back on what made the past decade a special one in gaming. Of course, new hardware, industry growth, and and overall shift to acceptance of gaming as a viable platform have helped define the decade that was, but for us gamers, it’s THE GAMES that we’ll look back on and remember the most. On the next episode of EpicBattleCry, we’ll be discussing a rather interesting topic…What was the most influential game/franchise of the past decade?

We wanna hear from you boys and girls to round up some input. I started a thread inside the EBA forums to discuss the matter and will soon give you some of my personal thoughts on which title might be good for the discussion. Now remember…we’re not asking for “Best” game of the decade…We wanna know which title/franchise INFLUENCED gaming the most. This could mean that the game/franchise helped redefine a genre, move gaming towards the mainstream, or otherwise had the most impact on the industry. In other words, gaming might be TOTALLY DIFFERENT if this title/franchise didn’t exist.

Also, feel free to cast your vote in the poll on the EpicBattleAxe.com home page. We’ll keep it live for a few days to gather some good input and let you all see what other people think as well.

Of course, you’ll hear what we conclude on the next episode of EpicBattleCry, which is scheduled to go live this coming Monday, January 4, 2010.

Alright gang, thanks in advance for you input…Now let us know what you think…ttys!

Today, Blizzard launched their new service allowing players to switch factions for their existing World of Warcraft characters. The service breaks down roughly like this:

players can switch an existing character (level 10 or higher) from Horde to Alliance or Alliance to Horde

players can re-customize their character, select a new race, and change names

non-faction-specific equipment and mounts will be retained, others will be replaced with a cross-faction equivalent

Blizzard has put together and in-depth FAQ that should answer all your questions. The new Faction Change service costs $30 per character, per faction change.
