BioWare has released a video detailing the musical score of Star Wars: The Old Republic. As many of you are aware, we here at the Axe are HUGE fans of musical scores for games, as apparent in our EBA Trax player (for those of you who haven’t, you should really check it out).
The score appears to be coming together nicely, merging some of the original music from the movies and game (KOTOR), then creating something completely new – but that’s not the only thing that got us excited about the video. Several new in game shots popped up throughout, including a player zooming across the Tatooine desert on a swoop (near the end of the video) and some footage from Hoth.
Nice!
It’s not like we needed yet another reason to get excited about the game, but this new video is extra special, especially for our Axeheads that have an appreciation for music in games. So, check it out right here and let us know what you think, and how you feel about the direction BioWare is taking with the game’s musical score.

JESUS 5 1/2 hours of original music…thats INSANE!
It’s vids like these which are pushing me onto the “got to play it” side of the fence. The KotOR soundtracks were fantastic, and the new stuff is definitely looking to impress.
I still get nostalgic when I hear music or sound effects from KotOR. Damn, that was a fun summer… Here’s to SWtOR creating new, fond memories.
Jusst like with the Alan Wake soundtrack, nice one Reuben:D
its an MMO after all, and doesnt this show that the game is in a large part complete? I doubt that they would start with post production if it isnt ready in a big way.
Just 5 hours? They cant put enough music in that game
DAMN that sounds amazing!!
I’m really glad that they seem to invest a lot in the audio-section, and that they are actually recording so many hours of music with a full orchestra! – everything else wouldn’t do a huge star wars game like this justice.
I really cant stand the sound of fake instruments and scores with synth/pseudo orchestra no matter how well produced/mastered it is, so I’m alway delighted by news like this!!!
I totally know what you mean, I feel the same!
Music is so important in Star Wars and to hear what they have for SWTOR just resonates the same feelings I get when listening to traditional SW pieces, Bioware have taken another great step in ensuring a true SW MMO.
5 and 1/2 hours of generic orchestral slush. AMA-ZING!
Can haz my thumbs down now?
Ahh, come on man…seriously, would you like playing a great game with the music off? I don’t think so….
EBAAXEMAN
Ehrm.. there’s actually some appeal to that – just the SFX. Makes the game more engaging. Especially if the music is obtrusive. Example, Tomb Raider and HalfLife had only periodic bursts of music which made the impact power of the music inversely proportional to the long intervals in which the music bytes played.
Offcourse, music is highly subjective but I’m an aural fetishist and I never miss a chance to discuss music sweet music.
peace
Oke, I’m going to call it. I officially hate BioWare as of right now.
They’re making this game too awesome by putting too much good stuff into this. It’s just terrible to see and here soo much goodness. And to think they were on my #1 spot as a gamestudio. I’m considering a boycot starting today. No more Bio-Wares for me, that’s for sure!
It should be illegal to put so much effort into games, it’s totally unfair to the competition. Also, they haven’t showed the bad things yet. Those are (as everybody knows) mandatory parts of games.
On a more serious note: I’m not into Star Wars. I love Bioware. I had decided to not even try this one out. I was certain I made the right choice. “WAS” being the key word. It’s just mean. Bad Bioware, Bad!
Seriously: (for real this time, promise)
Awesomeness. Still not going to try it. I think. Help! What should I do now?
I think you and the guy from SWTOR are both right to some degree. You should notice the music, but you shouldn’t notice it’s effect on you. Take the introduction to the Executor and the Imperial Fleet from The Empire Strikes Back. If you watch it without the music, you still get the impressive sense of scale of Vader’s Super Star Destroyer and the firepower of his fleet, but with John William’s Imperial March, it completely changes the feel of the scene. Instead of there just being a few big ships on camera, you get the sense that these are powerful war machines, filled with menace and dread, and where they go, death and destruction soon follow. But when you watch the movie, you don’t say, “Clearly John Williams’ soundtrack is telling me that these are big bad ships on their way to do big bad things,” you just KNOW. At least, that’s my own hamfisted take on it.
As for SWTOR, the music is freakin’ BEAUTIFUL. Just listening to it gives me goosebumps, and I don’t think any Star Wars game or film has done that to me since the original trilogy.
