RumorKill_022010
Happy weekend everyone and welcome to another week of rumors and gossip courtesy of EpicBattleAxe.com’s The Rumor KILL. It turned out to be a buzz filled week after a slow start, but hey, I’m not complaining because some of these stories are so juicy my computer screen is actually melting.  From PSN to Twisted Metal to more COD, this week was chock full of stuff gamers are dying to see, and some that they might not be as excited for. Well, enough hype…I’m sure you’ve been waiting all week for my words of wisdom (or maybe not) but it doesn’t matter because it all begins right…wait for it…NOW!

THE RUMOR: PSN Party Chat is coming to “premium” subscribers

THE SOURCE: Destructoid

MY TAKE: So this could be considered a two-for-one deal because not only are we dealing with the possibility of party chat but that niggling little rumor of a premium PSN subscription.  First off I have to say to all PSN users who don’t realize significance of party chat…it’s a big freakin’ deal!  Not only can you talk to your buddies when you’re all playing different games but when you’re in the same game playing certain modes of Modern Warfare 2 for example you don’t have to listen to 12 year old punks screaming in your ear (unless your friends do that in which case I recommend you find new friends).  Also, this premium service has been something that’s been discussed since the PS3 was released and news about it has been blowing in the wind longer then that balloon I lost when I was five. The service just needs the right features to get people to buy into it and a version of party chat could be just what the CEO ordered.

THE VERDICT: BELIEVE IT!!!!

It’s not a question of “IF” but a question of “WHEN” this premium PSN service will come into effect.  Now that the PS3 has finally hit its stride and has built a solid base for PSN, a premium subscription makes perfect sense from a business perspective.  For this new service to be a success both financially and practically two things need to happen however. First, the price for this new service cannot come ANYWHERE close to the price of Xbox Live, $20-$30/year max.  Secondly, Sony needs to still support the free users so that there isn’t a backlash of pissed off PSN users who feel Sony is forcing them to pay to get the full experience (as an XBL user I know the feeling…trust me). Having party chat as part of that paid service also seems logical.  It’s a feature that isn’t completely necessary but is a good luxury for those willing to pay a little extra for it. Ultimately, PSN users have to ask what amount they would pay to not hear some knob blaring their music to the point of mic peaking. I think most would be tempted to give up their kidney for that opportunity (I know I would).

THE RUMOR: A new Twisted Metal game is coming this year

THE SOURCE: 1UP

MY TAKE: Talk about long lasting rumors…a next gen Twisted Metal has been coming up everytime David Jaffe opens his mouth.  Seems when the guy makes a public appearance he either says something that hints at Twisted Metal or we twist what he says into something to do with Twisted Metal. This time Jaffe added more fuel to the rumor fire by referring to a new game which will have vehicles. Then he goes on to say it’s a new vehicle game where “those vehicles have other functionality besides driving”.  Then, to top this all off at the AIAS Interactive Achievement Awards ceremony, Jaffe answers a question with  ”soon, bitch – eight or nine months”.  That question according to 1UP could have been regarding a new Twisted Metal.  Hmmm…what could all this possibly mean?  Well, the funny thing is it could really be anything, but Twisted Metal is the only thing I can think about when Jaffe says the word “vehicle” or “car” or any other word relating to motorized transportation.

THE VERDICT: SPARE IT!!!

Yes, I know most of you are thinking that there’s been too little information about this game (aka nothing at all!) for a release within the next 8-9 months and I completely agree.  However, if Valve and L4D2 taught us anything it’s that there doesn’t need to be months or years of hype for a game to be successful.  True, L4D2 could be considered more of an expansion and a fresh new game would take longer but it’s been almost 5 years since the last Twisted Metal so the possibility of a huge reveal and a quick release date isn’t inconceivable.  Sure, it’s unlikely and almost improvable but I’ve seen stranger things happen so I won’t give up on it just yet.

THE RUMOR: Next Call Of Duty set in Cold War era

THE SOURCE: VG247

MY TAKE: WWII is dead!!!!!  WWII is DEAD!!!!  I swear to god I never thought I’d see the day when we can FINALLY put that era behind us and focus on other armed conflicts in our history.  We probably have the modern setting to thank for this shift in FPS war games and it won’t take long for us to get sick of that as well but for now let’s be happy that we might be enjoying another joyful war to sink our controllers into.  Anyways, the casting sheet VG247 shows is pretty damn convincing that Vietnam could be the new setting in the upcoming Call Of Duty and since these is no other time slot where being in Vietnam for war makes sense, the Cold War seems like the logical time period for more COD.

THE VERDICT: BELIEVE IT!!!

An underused setting used by a series that has defined war games…count me in!  I think developers have finally gotten it through their heads the WWII has been overplayed a bit and it’s time to move on.  Modern Warfare proved that other eras of war can work which of course lead everyone else to jump on the bandwagon and make “Like Modern Warfare but…” games, so it makes sense Treyarch would take this opportunity to branch out and take a risk.  Again, the casting sheet combined with the other news we’ve heard about Vietnam all seems to point in that direction and to be honest the Cold War is a good choice.  All of the violence, conflict, and the threat of nuclear war in that era could potentially add up to an excellent atmosphere for a war game.  Let’s just hope this doesn’t spawn another 10 years of the same game over and over again.  Don’t know what I mean?  Check out this list of WWII video games to see for yourself.

THE RUMOR: Heavy Rain could use motion controller

THE SOURCE: Kotaku

MY TAKE: This one kind of confuses me because I don’t have much programming knowledge, however it seems to me that it would take more than a patch for Quantic Dream to implement motion control.  Yet, at the same time, David Cage clearly stated there is a good chance for an announcement about motion control for Heavy Rain.  Does this mean we’re going to see a different version of the game when the PlayStation Motion Controller is released?  That doesn’t make sense.  Is the use of motion control on the disc already?  Well, Cage has stated motion control wasn’t feasible at the time of the games development.  Can you actually patch a game for a whole new control scheme like motion control? Maybe you guys can educate me on that one because I have no clue.  Still, of any PlayStation exclusive out there Heavy Rain is the one where motion control could actually make the gameplay experience better since the commands are all motion based anyway.

THE VERDICT: SPARE IT!!!

Motion control is still such a foreign concept that it’s hard to judge this rumor one way or the other.  If we look at all the games that are on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and the Wii the latter system always seems to need a completely new version of the game (though that could mostly due to the graphical downgrading) even to the point that the game is sometimes under a different title. Yet, Cage still insists an announcement is coming soon regarding this so we know something is up, but we just don’t know what.  I hope if there are new controls it doesn’t cause a screw up for those using SIXAXIS or something because new tech, especially unproven tech, can be risky.

THE FINAL SAY

This may be a little off topic but I like to use this space to get stuff off my chest so I will indulge myself.  Anyone who is reading this and happens to be one of those douchebags who glitches Modern Warfare 2 after every god damn patch needs to stick their head in a blender and push the ON button. Infinity Ward took its time to make a great multiplayer experience for us to enjoy and you little turds spit right in their faces every time you exploit the game and make them work their asses off to patch it only for the cycle to repeat. It’s not fair to the developers, the players, or the gaming community as a whole and it needs to stop. If you don’t everyone’s going to stop playing and you little hackers will be all alone playing a broken piece of junk on your own. Hard to claim to be good when only cheaters are playing isn’t it?

Yes, I know there were no killed rumors this week and as much as I long for bloodshed like all of you my opinions said otherwise. If you think one of these should have been killed or otherwise then let me know below by telling everyone whether you think these rumors should be KILLEDBELIEVED or SPARED.  Also, my weekly challenge of finding definite proof of these rumors one way of the other still stands and I encourage you to grace that knowledge upon us oh wise one.  Have a happy week ahead everyone and I’ll see y’all next time for more of EpicBattleAxe.com’s The Rumor KILL.
