Valve’s Gabe Newell has promised at least three “big surprises” in the next 12 months, according to the latest issue of PC Gamer.
Knowing Valve, Newell could have pulled the number “three” out of thin air–maybe it was the number of doughnuts he had for breakfast that morning. Either way, Valve wants to prepare us for a shocking year.
“I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn’t going to stop any time soon. I’m just laughing because… people will be shocked again,” Newell said. “We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least.”
So what could the three–at least–surprises from Valve be? My bet is on Half-Life 3, a full-length TF2 movie and a hat DLC pack for Left 4 Dead 2. What do you guys think Valve is cooking up? Make your wishlist in the comments!

What I would want to see (What many people would like to see) would be an ending to the Episode 2 cliffhanger. In other words… Half-Life 2: Episode Three. But after all this time.. it’s not really enough to just get a short adventure to wrap up the Episodic series. So… maybe they’ll do both Episode 3 and Half-Life 3 within a resonable timeframe. (To be realistic… that will probably never happen.)
Another thing that I think would be interesting to explore is some sort of DLC for Left 4 Dead 2 where you get to play as the Midnight Riders (The band who were supposed to play the concert during the Dark Carnival finale) and who are seen as some kind of an easter egg where you see the Midnight Riders tour bus speed through an area in The Passing.
Think about it… starting off with some guitars, bass guitars, drum sticks, microphone stands and a suitcase full of pistols and money? That would be an awesome DLC pack.
Well, you know what happened last time they anounced a surprise. What we have here is an anouncement that there will be further anouncements. No surprise there.
But 12 months will probably take longer in Valve-time.
Well, considering you made a fat joke, I can safely say that you can rule out any announcement about Half-Life 3 or Episode Three; Gabe will just delay it further.
Thanks a lot, Jess.
From least likely to most likely
1. TF2 Update Package for PS3 and Xbox360.
2. Counter Strike 2
3. Half-Life Ep3
Buy your tickets for the hype train here folks…
I think if valve dont wont half life to die on its arse they had best show something as to where thats going, but i think the 3 BIG SURPRISES are L4D3 L4D4 AND L4D5 LOL!!! all within the next 12 months.
it’s Half life TWO episode fucking THREE. and I predict it’ll finally come( in reality I only hope so)
1. Half-life Episode Three: Soon available in a store near you!
2. New IP
3. Half-Life 3 announcement.
I’ll have a gander.
New Engine with a new Counter Strike running on it as well as news on the development of Half Life 3 on that engine. Release dates to be determined, valve style.
Half Life 2: Episode 3… finally…. not a surpise though.
The DotA-esque game they’ve apparantly been trying to keep quiet about unsuccessfully.
Steam –> PS3
L4D –> PS3
L4D 3
maybe HL2 Ep3.
Gabe Newell did promised that once Valve had made a equally good game on PS3 and Xbox 360, there would be a PS3 exclusive, and with steam coming to PS3 that exclusive may come at first as a Portal 2 mod.
HL2:Episode 3 is no surprise and so isn’t Left 4 Dead 3 on PS3, but a movie announce or new graphic engine would be cool.
I would like Half-Life episode 3, Half-Life 3, and Left 4 Dead 1&2 on the PS3
my wish list
1. a new game
2.half life 3
3 portal 3
Awesome news! I am prepared for some really sweet treats this Christmas.
Anyways, I think that Valve probably coming out with the next episode for Half Life 2, the third part of Team Fortress (yes, yes completely new characters, maybe improved game balance and of course tons of new weapons) AND the biggest one will prolly come last, I think it is a completely new GAME not connected to neither of their current titles. Their engine is sweet and from what I have seen from Portal 2 they did so many cool things with physics and gameplay ))
NEW GAME – who wants to bet ? heh
Another crazy ideas:
L4D –> PS3 –> PS Move
Entire Orange Box –> PS Move
The ”huge surprises” will probably be lame, like the E3 ps3 announcement, so I won’t get my hopes up for HL(ep)3 again :/
1. L4D3 coming in November 2011! New features include four new character skins, two new infected types, three new campaigns and no major gameplay modifications from L4D or L4D2 to justify another sequel!
2. The PS3 version of Portal 2 will include two extra levels! They will be available for $2 each on XBLA six months after release!
3. New hats for TF2! Finally, more fucking hats! Everyone who loves TF2 is psyched! Everyone else is confused!
Seriously, I want HL3 (not just ep. 3–at this point, we deserve a whole game) and two new IPs. Perhaps a Valve-developed RPG? That could be awesome. Even a Half-Life MMO would be more interesting than another Left 4 Dead or TF2 update. But after E3′s giant mystery announcement ended up just being Portal 2 on PS3–cool, but nowhere near as amazing as they made it sound–I’ll keep my hopes in check.
A friend of mine in the industry thinks they will skip EP 3 and just release a new game as 3 with a new version of the soruce engine.
Frankly the only thing Valve can do at this point that WOULD surprise me is to actually release EP 3 and stop dicking around with psuedo-indie co-opted source mod releases, or updating TF2 with a new colored hat. Not that I don’t appreciate continued support of existing games, but jesus christ already valve — make something substantial!
Thanks to the upcoming World Basketball Festival, we now get a “USA” Air Jordan 2010 Team. It seems as if more people like the Air Jordan 2010 Team than the original Air Jordan 2010 because of the windowless side panels. I’m not one of those people who likes the team better; I think the original
nike shoes 2010 Shoes looks much better.Since this jordan shoes Team is made for the USA team, the colorway should be clear. White can be seen on the side panels, toe, shoe laces, tongue, part of the midsole and the entire outsole. Navy blue covers the toe, heel, inner lining and above the midsole. Red accents appear on the tongue, toe, heel, lace panels and the midsole. The sneaker is constructed of perforated white leather with larger perforations placed on the side panels.
hat dlc for l4d2, I loled… with a shudder.
