Here's a quick look at some games being played with the prototype version of the Steam Controller -- the same version that we'll be shipping to 300 Steam use...

Civ with a controller... I thought I'd never see the day (or want to). I think for FPS it actually might be pretty nice, not sure what other genres though... I'd have to imagine stuff like fighting games would be pretty terrible on it

yeh id imagine fighting games would be a pain but its good to see developers can basically map anything they want to the circle pads(?). They requested consumer feedback of what to see next so give them a shout to show some Street Fighter :)

But the thing is Mitch, I don't think the Steam controller is trying to replace the controllers we already have. It seems like it's another alternative to certain genres of games that tend to control better with mouse and keyboard compared to the controllers that are currently available. It actually looks really darn cool.

Well it kind of is, because they want this to be the go to Steam in the living room controller. What this controller is meant to provide is a (arguably superior) keyboard and mouse experience on the TV, and whilst it may not replace those who already have their favourite controllers its definately designed to transition M&K users over to the land of us controller uses. That's the long goal anyways, but it looks nifty I just question its usability in certain situations that is all.

It answered some questions I had, but I still need to try before I buy, hopefully a lot of store will have it set up...

The Axe Factor Poll!

What do YOU think the game industry should do to address social injustice?
Nothing, everyone should make the games they want to and include whatever they like0%
Provide players a choice with regard to gender/ethnicity/sexuality0%
At every stage of the process, simply ask "Are we being exclusionary?"0%
Other (Post a comment on TAF 156)0%
Not much needs to happen beyond raising awareness, people will make better choices once they understand why its important0%
Accurate information needs to be injected so publishers understand that being inclusionary doesn't equate financial loss0%

Gamer or QA tester? Early Access (long)

On the 16th of May 2007 the Halo 3 public Multiplayer Beta saw release for members of Microsoft's Xbox Live Subscription service. It contained 3 maps, a handful of game modes to play as well as a selection of the new weapons added in the sequel. Ostensibly the build was disseminated to test the matchmaking system, network loads and game balance but the use of an outdated iteration or 'Build', the heavy marketing and it's bundling with another…
